Psychologist Kris Kelvin is about to embark on an interstellar journey to a space station orbiting the remote oceanic planet Solaris. He spends his last day on Earth reflecting on his life while walking by a lake near his childhood home where his elderly father still resides. Upon his arrival at Solaris Station, none of the three remaining scientists bother to greet Kelvin, who finds the disarrayed space station dangerously neglected. He soon learns that his friend among the scientists, Dr. Gibarian had killed himself and had left a rambling cryptic farewell video message addressed to him. The ocean on the planet Solaris emanates radiations able to materialize memories and obsessions of the human beings. The film was presented in Italy as "The Russian answer to 2001: Odissea nello spazio".
