The Phantom Carriage

According to a Swedish legend, the last person to die each year has to collect the souls of everyboby who dies the following year with the carriage of death. David Holm is an alcoholic carpenter who mistreats his wife and dreams to be in charge of this carriage. In this daydream, he faces his soul who helps him to redeem his life and save his wife from suicide. The film is notable for its special effects, its advanced (for the time) narrative structure with flashbacks within flashbacks, and for having been a major influence on Ingmar Bergman.
