A former teacher decides to move with all his family - his wife and three children - to a small village in the Maira Valley, on the mountains, in order to escape the wrongs of civilization. Philippe and his wife start producing goat cheese and tries to be accepted by the old people of the village, but little by little misunderstandings, envy and conflicts take over and for Philippe everything becomes more difficult. The ideal of tolerance that once characterized this valley where, as a character of the movie says, "jews, muslims, heretical people, catholics used to live together", seems to be forgotten.
