Peter Hradil, a former doctor, arrives in a small mountain village to work in the local sawmill. Here he meets for the second time Marta Vlachová, his last patient. When he met her for the first time, he was at the beginning of his career as a doctor, and for her he carried out an illegal abortion which cost him his degree in medicine. She asks him to leave the village, but Peter refuses and decides to stay.
